Classy veterans Tell Me a Story and J K Pure Pearl padded their pensions Friday night, winning the $30,000 co-features at Yonkers Raceway. Tell Me A Story sat a tight pocket in the Open Trot. With Jim Pantalteano driving from the pylons for trainer Virgil Morgan Jr., Tell Me a Story stung even-money favorite Beach Nut Brand (Pat Lachance) before that one made the lead. He put up intervals of :28.2, :58.1 and 1:28, with Kaline (Steve Smith) trying it first-over. Beach Nut Brand was about to wear out his welcome in and out of the final turn, with Tell Me a Story ducking inside. He defeated the horse on his back, Victor's Vicky (Jordan Stratton), by a half-length in a season's-best 1:57.2. Kaline, Nahcotta Jude (Jim Marohn) and Beach Nut Brand rounded out the payees. For Tell Me A Story. a 6-year-old Keystone Nordic gelding owned by Ian Fromowitz, he returned $16.60 (fourth choice) for his third victory in nine seasonal tries. He led a $122 exacta and $774 triple. J K Pure Pearl (Jason Bartlett), beaten by the wire from off the pace in last week's Filly and Mare Open Handicap Pace, was on the move early this evening. Leaving from post position No. 7, the 6-5 choice worked around invader Cruzin Foralivin N (Greg Grismore) after a :28.1 opening quarter-mile. She then found a tepid :58 intermission and 1:27 three-quarters, while Brickyard Trouble (Ray Baynes) again fought the good fight first-up. J K Pure Pearl held her foes off, defeating Cruzin Foralivin N by a half-length in a season's-best 1:55.1. "Trouble" was third, with Patty Ben Beau (Stephane Bouchard) and Laura Lane N (Pantaleano) completing the cashers. For J K Pure Pearl, a 4-year-old daughter of Bettor's Delight, she returned $4.50 for her sixth win in 10 seasonal starts. Linda Toscano trained for co-owners William Jacobowitz, Camelot Stable and 3 Brothers Stable. The exacta paid $18.60, with the triple worth $105. (Yonkers)
