Current Hanover, a 3-year-old filly by Western Ideal, captured the $200,000 Thomas D’Altrui Miss New Jersey in 1:50.3 Saturday night at the Meadowlands.

Southwind Rio was the first to fire to the lead, but driver George Brennan was not content to sit behind her for long and hustled Current Hanover to the lead in a hot :53.4 half.  Current Hanover began pulling away from the field at the head of the stretch and held off the late rally of Platinum Hanover for a three-quarter-length victory.  Current Hanover returned $8.60, $5.20, $2.60.

Lady Mattgalane, the 3-5 favorite, faded to third after grinding her way first-over and becoming rough-gaited in the stretch.

Current Hanover notched her second win this season and fourth in 12 career starts for owners David McDuffee and Irv Liverman. She was a $75,000 yearling purchase at the 2005 Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

"She was good last week and Nifty (trainer Richard Norman) made a change on her this week,” Brennan said.  “He changed her bridle and she responded very well.  I didn’t know how the race was going to unfold.  Pierce left out of there [with Southwind Rio] and there were other horses that I really didn’t want to sit behind, so I had to move her back to the lead.  Nifty had her on top of her game and she stepped it up.  [The third-quarter breather] helped, shifting into the wind at the top of the lane.” (Meadowlands)
