The Big M & VLTs

According to a report in New York's Newsday, a key lawmaker in New Jersey has said that better than estimated state revenues will kill any prospect of putting video lottery terminals (VLTs) at the Meadowlands. Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey has been proposing slots at the Meadowlands to help the state's fiscal situation.

Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew called the slots proposal, "dead, buried and decomposing." Van Drew heads the Assembly's Tourism and Gaming Committee. That committee would be expected to consider any slots proposal.

Codey's office said later that VLTs are still a part of the budget proposal. Some have said they believe it would take a constitutional amendment to put VLTs at the Meadowlands while others have maintained that the machines are an extension of the state lottery.
