The Duke falls short

Country Duke A's quest to equal the Monticello Raceway record of nine wins in a row fell one win short when the 12-yea-old pacer finished third in a $5,000 claiming event Tuesday afternoon. His eight-win streak was one less than Don Torpid's record set back in 1983.



The race was won by A Star Is Born in 2:01.1 over a rain-soaked track. Country Duke A and driver Jimmy Devaux had led throughout most of the contest before being passed by the winner and runner-up Western Sakra in deep stretch.



"He raced his usual race (on the front end) but the deep going must have taken a toll on the old guy and he tied in the stretch," Devaux said. "Winning nine races in a row at one racetrack is a tough task. We didn't make that ninth (victory) in a row but we have nothing to be ashamed of."
