Third Day, who fell victim to a brutal trip last week, made his own luck on Monday at The Meadows, capturing the $23,000 Preferred Handicap Pace in wire-to-wire fashion. Dave Palone avoided traffic problems by gunning Third Day to the lead in :27. When the pair strolled through the second panel in :30, there was no catching them. The son of Cole Muffler scored in 1:52, a length better than Pardon You. Vesuvio Grande finished third. Mike Palone trains Third Day for Fran Azur. Palone also tallied with Maltese Artist, whose bank account exceeds $2 million but whose recent disappointing performances left him eligible for a conditioned race. Maltese Artist triumphed from post position nine in 1:51.4. Driver Tony Hall had four wins on the 13-race card. (The Meadows)
