These boots were made for pacing, and War Boots proved that again on Monday at The Meadows by capturing the $23,000 Open Preferred Handicap Pace with a rousing late rally. It was the third consecutive victory for War Boots and pushed his career earnings to $109,658. War Boots was sixth at the half but enjoyed a suicidal third-panel duel between Third Day and Maltese Artist that knocked both off the ticket. Turning for home, trainer-driver Ray Paver asked for the customary late kick of War Boots, who responded by winning in 1:51.2, one length better than Rock N Roll Star. Pacey Deucey was a closing third. Shirley Mitchell owns War Boots, a 4-year-old son of Memphis Flash and the Albert Albert mare Fancy Boots. The card also featured The Meadows’ first two events of 2008 for 2 year olds; each resulted in a national season’s best for age, gender, gait and track size. TSM Opal Star T, a homebred filly pacer for Ted Tomson, scored in 1:56.2. Dick Stillings drove the daughter of Jate Lobell-TSM Black Pearls for trainer Jan Fread. In the other pace for freshmen, Battleship Kelly, a son of Allamerican Native-Belle Sarah, steamed to victory in 1:57.1 for driver Dave Palone, trainer Mickey Burke and owners Randy and Michael Ringer.
