Eight lengths separated Three Of Spades ($3.80) from leader Dark Sign through the far turn, but a :27.3 final quarter was enough for Three Of Spades to prevail in his second consecutive Commodore Barry late-closer division Sunday afternoon at Harrah’s Chester. The 4-year-old
Moving up the backstretch, the Maryland-bred was pinned on the cones by a first-over Rendarosa (George Brennan), but managed to shake free going into the far turn.
“I wasn’t really concerned about getting locked in, but I had good horses in front of me,” said Roberts. “The trip ended up working out really well.”
Out three wide past three-quarters in 1:23.4, Three Of Spades overtook Tevenay Hall and Tiger Tinch (Tony Morgan), and was within a neck of leader Dark Sign at the head of the stretch. Three Of Spades went on to take the lead mid-stretch, prevailing by a length in 1:53. Dark Sign held second after a :55.1 middle half, and Tiger Tinch closed up the open stretch for third.
“He likes to pass horses, the track was off, and I just wanted to race him as easily as possible,” added Roberts. Three Of Spades is co-owned by William De Lodovico and trainer Bib Roberts. Other division winners in the Commodore Barry were Mister Mystic (1:53.2, Eric Goodell) and Five divisions of the William Penn late-closer were also contested, with Doggone Incredible ($21.80) taking the fastest division in 1:52.1 for driver Eric Goodell. Cat Manzi drove Chris Riley N (1:53.0) to victory in the first division, with Tetrick partnering Brokaw (1:52.4), Getting Real (1:53.3) and Third Day (1:53.4) in their respective splits.
