Eight lengths separated Three Of Spades ($3.80) from leader Dark Sign through the far turn, but a :27.3 final quarter was enough for Three Of Spades to prevail in his second consecutive Commodore Barry late-closer division Sunday afternoon at Harrah’s Chester.

The 4-year-old Cam’s Card Shark entire settled in well off the lead early on, as Tevenay Hall (Anthony Colletta) immediately went to the front. Dark Sign (Tim Tetrick) then claimed command going through the first turn, holding a two-length lead through a quarter of :28.3. Jonathan Roberts kept Three Of Spades well clear of the pacesetters through a half of :56.2, some six lengths away at that point.

Moving up the backstretch, the Maryland-bred was pinned on the cones by a first-over Rendarosa (George Brennan), but managed to shake free going into the far turn.

“I wasn’t really concerned about getting locked in, but I had good horses in front of me,” said Roberts. “The trip ended up working out really well.”

Out three wide past three-quarters in 1:23.4, Three Of Spades overtook Tevenay Hall and Tiger Tinch (Tony Morgan), and was within a neck of leader Dark Sign at the head of the stretch. Three Of Spades went on to take the lead mid-stretch, prevailing by a length in 1:53. Dark Sign held second after a :55.1 middle half, and Tiger Tinch closed up the open stretch for third.

“He likes to pass horses, the track was off, and I just wanted to race him as easily as possible,” added Roberts. Three Of Spades is co-owned by William De Lodovico and trainer Bib Roberts.

Other division winners in the Commodore Barry were Mister Mystic (1:53.2, Eric Goodell) and Tiber Hanover (1:53.4, Jim Meittinis).

Five divisions of the William Penn late-closer were also contested, with Doggone Incredible ($21.80) taking the fastest division in 1:52.1 for driver Eric Goodell. Cat Manzi drove Chris Riley N (1:53.0) to victory in the first division, with Tetrick partnering Brokaw (1:52.4), Getting Real (1:53.3) and Third Day (1:53.4) in their respective splits.
