Grain Of Truth continued his run of success at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs with a win in the featured Open Handicap trot on Tuesday night. The race carried the evening’s top purse of $24,000.
With Mike Simons in the bike for trainer Ray Schnittker, Grain Of Truth, leaving from post position seven in an eight-horse field, quickly settled into the pocket behind Autumn Escapade, the early leader. Those two horses stayed in front until the stretch, when Simons urged the 9-year-old gelding, who shared Trotter of the Year honors at Pocono in 2009, into the passing lane, winning by a half-length in 1:55 on a track listed in good condition due to steady rain. Autumn Escapade faded to second while Salutation Hanover took third.
Grain Of Truth, owned by Charles and Giorgan Iannazzo of Tappan, NY, now has three wins and two second-place finishes in five 5 Open Handicap trots in the 2010 Pocono meet. The 9-year-old gelding, who went off at 4-1, owns 51 career victories with over $823,000 in lifetime earnings. (Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs)
