Tigerama now a millionaire

December 31, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

With his second-place finish in the $45,000 Open Pace Saturday evening at Woodbine, hard-knocking Richard Griffiths pupil Tigerama sent his career earnings past the $1-million plateau for owner Robert Hamather of Exeter, Ontario.

Pilot Mark MacDonald, who was at Tigerama’s lines, left alertly from post five and was first to both the opening quarter (:26.3) and half-mile (:55) indicators. The 6-year-old son of Village Jiffy was sitting second by the time the third panel (1:22.1) rang to life, and he would hold the place spot the rest of the way, as Secrets Nephew went on to stop the teletimer in 1:50.2.

Tigerama, who was also bred by Hamather, finished a half-length in arrears.

Eight of Tigerama’s 44 career wins have come this season, one in which he has banked over $330,000 in purses and recorded three sub-1:50 victories.

Tigerama, who finished second to Primetime Bobcat in the 2006 Spring Pacing Championship, has reached the notable earnings milestone at the youthful age of six while racing primarily at WEG’s Open level--something Griffiths, a 54-year-old resident of Thorndale, Ontario, has noted he is quite proud of.

“[When Tigerama was first starting out] Robert and I were pretty sure we had a good horse on our hands, but for him to be coming up on a million already, I wasn’t expecting that,” Griffiths told www.WoodbineEntertaibnment.com in the weeks leading up to the milestone. “It’s not like he made a boatload of money in one season by winning one or two big races.

“He’s been able to earn a very respectable chunk every year and I think that is a testament to him.”
