On Tuesday Tim Tetrick set the world record for most driving victories in a single year, guiding home winner number 1, 078, Stonebridge Kisses, at Dover Downs. On Wednesday, Tetrick was the unanimous choice by all the nominators for Driver of the Year as voted by the U.S. Harness Writers Association–which automatically makes him Driver of the Year. It is the first time in recent memory a category had but one figure thought deserving of the award by the writers’ chapters.
And how can you argue with Tetrick’s year? The victory total pushed him past Walter Case Jr.’s win mark for one year of sulky action, and Brian Sears’s 2005 record for money won in a season, $15.1 million, has long been left in the Tetrick dust, with Tim’s total now $16.5 million and growing every day.
The accomplishments of Tetrick this season are even more impressive when you consider that it was just last November that Tim chose to pull up stakes from his native Illinois and Midwestern racing to “take a shot” at the bigger purses and faster company of East Coast racing. A year later, the leading driver at Harrington, Dover Downs, Harrah’s Chester, and Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs has obviously come, saw, and conquered–and with quality stakes drives behind Southwind Lynx, Southwind Tempo, Danae, Pampered Princess under his belt, too.
