Tioga bars Engler

July 07, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Tioga Downs has announced that Ellen Engler of Middletown, N.Y. who has been listed as the trainer of record for horses owned by Sidney Korn, Alvin Jacobs, David Schneider and the VIP Internet Stable, has been informed that her racing privileges have been rescinded. Tim Case who previously has been the trainer of record for these owners was denied racing privileges before the Tioga meet started.

Tioga Downs’ security personnel discovered during a background check that Ms. Engler and Mr. Case shared the same home address. Further investigation revealed that the horses in question were in fact being trained by Mr. Case. The management policy regarding excluded individuals also applies to any individual acting as an agent in any capacity. These owners will be eligible to participate at Tioga Downs upon management approving the trainer responsible for the care and welfare of their horses.

Jeff Gural, chairman of Tioga Downs, issued a statement: “every effort will be taken to prevent the practice of allowing suspended or excluded trainers and owners to simply use another’s name to circumvent rulings and policies implemented to uphold the integrity of racing. For years this practice has been a major contributor to a negative public perception of horse racing. Our security division has several other possible violations of this policy under review”.
