Last year Tioga Downs, in conjunction with its horsemen’s group, the Southern Tier Harness Horsemen's Association (STHHA), experimented with a pilot program to lower its takeout rates across the board to New York state minimums. The track will continue with the program in 2011.
The original Tioga Downs’ takeout rates were 18 percent for WPS, 20 percent for exactas/doubles, and 25 percent for all other exotics. For the 2011 race season the price of those wagers will be reduced as they were in 2010 to: 15 percent WPS, 17 percent exacta/double and 21 percent for all other exotics.
“We are happy that the program was a success last year and we will continue to support the racetracks lower rates this year. The STHHA understands that management is focusing on our bettors concerns and we support that 100 percent,” said Guy Howard, president of the STHHA.
“We made the move last year to reduce the takeouts across the board and we got a lot of positive feedback from horseplayers across the country. This is an initiative that we stand behind and believe that more tracks should make the move to lower takeouts,” said Jason M. Settlemoir, VP of Racing and Simulcast at Tioga.
