Tom Haughton was transported to a Lexington hospital Sunday night following a race accident at The Red Mile, with his wife, Lynn, telling harnessracing.com Monday afternoon the 52 year old suffered a fractured scapula (shoulder blade) and five cracked ribs. Haughton was hurt in the night's 11th race when he was dumped to the racetrack as a result of a top-of-the-stretch incident that sent horses scattering.
The incident occured in a $6,000 late-closer for 2-year-old trotters when the Henry Lunsford-driven He's Lucky, who had been racing near the front for most of the mile, began to tire at the top of the stretch. When He's Lucky suddenly took a few bad steps and fell, Haughton could not avoid the fallen horse with the Kent Gustavsson-trained 2-year-old trotter Assassin's Eyes.
Lynn Haughton said her husband may need shoulder surgery, but no decision has been made if and where the procedure would be performed. She said Haughton's mother, Dottie, was on her way to Lexington to be with Tom, who is at St. Joe's Hospital, just a few blocks from The Red Mile.
Although the other trailing horses scattered, there were no other injuries reported.
