Tom Ridge falters

October 02, 2004 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Tom Ridge, the world's fastest trotter, was beaten by Al Dente Hanover in a $112,400 division of the Transylvania Saturday afternoon at The Red Mile. Tom Ridge set most of the pace, but faded to fourth in the 1:54.3 mile.

Luc Ouellette raced Al Dente Hanover off the pace as Ron Pierce put Tom Ridge on the front, carving out fractions of :27.4, :56.1 and 1:25.4. When Mark O'Mara tipped from the two hole with Lantern's Law in the last turn, Ouellette followed with his charge.

At the top of the lane it was obvious Tom Ridge was laboring and Lantern's Law swept by him. Al Dente Hanover had the most trot left and reached the wire a comfortable winner with Con Mac taking second and Lantern's Law holding on for third.

Pierce had this to say about Tom Ridge after the race: "He warmed up like a monster and he felt really good through the quarter and half, but at the three-quarters he didn't seem like he had any trot left. It just wasn't his day."
