The broodmares Babe Ruthless and Cressida Hanover, buoyed by offspring that were the leading moneywinners on the pacing and trotting gait respectively in North America, have been named 2006 Broodmares of the Year in voting by the U.S. Harness Writers Association.

Babe Ruthless is a 16-year-old mare by Walton Hanover-Mommy Dear who was bred by Coventry Farm and DI Farms of New Jersey and is currently owned by John and Judy Egloff of Gettysburg, Pa.

Total Truth, a son of Jenna’s Beach Boy and Babe Ruthless who earned $1,494,222 last year as a 3 year old, was the major contributor to his dam’s credentials last year, winning the North America Cup, the Hoosier Cup, the Cane Pace and the Progress Pace, with a record of 1:49.1

Cressida Hanover is a 9-year-old daughter of Mr. Lavec-Cristi Hanover who was bred by Hanover Shoe Farms of Hanover, Pa., and is owned by Brittany Farms of Versailles, Ky.

The 2006 Trotting Triple Crown winner Glidemaster is Cressida Hanover’s first foal, and all the Yankee Glide colt did last year besides taking the Hambletonian, Kentucky Futurity and Yonkers Trot was post earnings of $1,918,701 for the season–the largest amount ever won by a trotter in a single North American campaign. His speed mark was 1:51.1.

The connections of Babe Ruthless and Cressida Hanover will pick up their awards at the USHWA annual Awards Dinner, to be held Sunday, Feb. 25, at the Borgata in Atlantic City. Tickets for the event, priced at $100, can be obtained from Scott Warren at (302) 222-1222 or (302) 398-7595. For room reservations, call the Borgata before Jan. 24 at 1-866-MY BORGATA and mention code GNHR1B7. Those wishing to take out a congratulatory ad in the Dinner Journal should contact Debbie Little at (201) 438-4456. (USHWA)
