Top colts to square off at Stockholm track

April 10, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Surtees Hanover is set to take on Lord Capar, the top European 2-year-old of 2007, at the Solvalla racetrack in Stockholm next Wednesday, April 15. Surtees Hanover is eligible to the Hambletonian and the colt's trainer, Roger Walmann, has said plans call for the colt--now Swedish-based--to return to the US this summer.

Lord Capar, a son of Varenne-Foxy'n Rowdy, won 10 of 13 starts last year, highlighted by the Piero Biondi Memorial, a prestigious Italian criterium. Surtees Hanover, a son of Andover Hall-Sharise Seelster, won 8 of 10 starts in the North America last year for trainer Jonas Czernyson before Bob Rosenheim sold the colt to Tommy Jacobsson's Stall Zenith, which also owns Giant Diablo.

The two top colts will meet in the Oktan Sunds Trot with just $16,700 to the winner. It will be contested over a distance of 2,140 meters with a mobile starts.

The distance will be new to Surtees Hanover, and so will his driver. He will be catch-driven by Hans Owe Sundberg. Orjan Kihlstrom, the first-call driver for Walmann, has been driving Lord Capar since the beginning of that colt's racing career. Johan Untersteiner, who drove Giant Diablo to her world-record mile in Lexington, will be serving a suspension on Wednesday and thus unable to drive.

Micro Mesh, the 2-Year-Old Trotter of the Year in Sweden last year, was beaten by Lord Capar in his 2008 debut, but made his second start a winning effort on Wednesday, April 9, at Solvalla. The son of Viking Kronos-Gambari, by Victory Dream won in a mile rate of 2:03 over 2,140 meters for trainer-driver Lufti Kolgjini.

Micro Mesh was bred by Margareta Wallenius-Kleberg's Menhammar Stud, the leading Swedish breeder in 2007.
