Both Western Ace and Total Truth come into the Breeders Crown having made 13 starts this year, and trainer George Teague Jr. says the two sophomore colt pacers are ready to give good efforts in their respective eliminations Saturday night at Woodbine.
Western Ace drew post two in the first elimination, while Total Truth landed the outside post nine in the second in what appears to be loaded with the division’s bearcats: Artistic Fella, Jereme’s Jet, Armbro Deuce and Shark Gesture, not to mention supplemental entry Fox Valley Tribal.
“I like their chances, but Total Truth definitely drew a bad spot. He drew in with five or six of the best horses in the race, and he got the nine hole to boot,” Teague told harnessracing.com. “He’ll need a lucky trip to get into the race. That was definitely a division to not be in if you want to make it to the final. You’ll definitely have to work hard--every horse in the race, not just us.”
Total Truth’s Triple Crown chances evaporated after coming up short in the Little Brown Jug, but the Cane Pace winner also numbers the $1 million North America Cup among his five wins this year. Teague, his sister Brenda, and Only Money Inc. share ownership of the $1.1-million winning son of Jenna’s Beach Boy.
Total Truth has been busy as he has made three starts in double-heat races this year; beside the Little Brown Jug he also started in the Adios and Hoosier Cup, coming up a winner in the latter. Western Ace also has made three appearances this year in double-heat contests: the Little Brown Jug, the Confederation Cup and the Adios. He has not started since finishing 3-8 in the Jug Sept. 21.
“He’s got a good shot,” said Teague. “I didn’t bring him (to The Red Mile for Grand Circuit racing) because he’s had a pretty grueling year and his blood count wasn’t as good as it should have been. I wanted to sit back and try to get it back up again before I went to the Breeders Crown.”
Overall, Western Ace has won twice in his 13 starts this year for the Teagues and partner Kovach Stables.
