The Delaware News Journal has reported that Rainbow Blue, the 2004 Horse of the Year, has been retired. Trainer and co-owner George Teague Jr. said today that the now 5-year-old daughter of Artiscape re-injured her leg in training earlier this week.

Rainbow Blue, sidelined with a torn tendon in her left leg since last June, had been training well for a return to the racetrack until Teague noticed swelling in the left leg on Thursday. Plans are being made for her breeding career.

Rainbow Blue won 30 of 32 races with career earnings of $1,428,934.

"It's very disappointing, but we don't want to take a chance and put her back out there," Teague said. "I was hoping the problem wouldn't raise it's ugly head again.

"I think, without a doubt, she is one of the best of all time. She had all the tools, size, speed, endurance and the will to win. She did her part."
