The reigning Elitlopp champion Torvald Palema captured the Hugo Aberg Memorial on Tuesday night at the Jaegersro track in Malmo, Sweden, and his huge victory in 1:52.1 prompted discussions in the winner’s circle about a possible trip to the United States.

When asked if he would now consider taking Torvald Palema to the U.S. to compete, trainer-driver Ake Svanstedt said that he might entertain racing the son of Alf Palema at The Red Mile in Lexington because he prefers the clay track.

Torvald Palema won the race by picking up cover and then launching a wide rally in the homestretch. Jaded was the early leader, then Standpoint. Columbian Necktie pulled first and raced first-over before taking the lead turning for home, but couldn’t hold off Torvald Palema. Russel November was second and Igor Font took third, while Columbian Necktie faded to fourth.

Torvald Palema was bred by Karl-Erik Bender, who won the 1992 Hambletonian with Alf Palema and has a starter in this year’s race, Symphonic Hanover. Symphonic Hanover is owned by a partnership with includes Bender and Per Eriksson, who trained Alf Palema.
