Toscano explains decision

Return Home
June 12, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Although Ron Pierce has been cleared to drive in stakes events at Mohawk Saturday night, a decision had been made by the connections of leading contender Kenneth J to switch to Brian Sears, and trainer Linda Toscano has revealed the process behind that decision. Pierce had been approved by the Ontario Racing Commission to drive as the conditions imposed by Swedish authorities allowed for him to drive in major stakes events during the suspension that runs through June 18.

"Things were up in the air and we were uncertain as to what was going to happen," Toscano told Woodbine Entertainment Group officials this morning. "It was Mr. Jacobs (owner of Kenneth J) who made the executive decision to ask Brian. We couldn't leave Brian hanging because he had other offers to drive in the race, so Mr. Jacobs thought it was in our best interest to commit to him and then take the worry of the driver situation out of the equation.

"There is no animosity towards Ronnie or anything like that at all. Mr. Jacobs is a businessman and he just wanted to have all his ducks in a row so we could move forward and focus on the race itself. I was happy with how the colt raced Saturday after getting roughed up on the front end. I'm hoping he's at his best this Saturday." (with files from WEG)
