Top colts and fillies were in action in qualifiers at the Meadowlands Thursday morning and among the most notable were the trotting filly Pampered Princess and the pacing males Western Ace and the 4-year-old Total Truth, with the pacers turning in winning miles in 1:50.4 and 1:50.3, respectively. The George Teague Jr.-trained Western Ace and Total Truth were both driven by Ron Pierce. Western Ace used a :26.4 final quarter to pull away from Definitely Maybe, winning by 9 ½ lengths. Total Truth carved out fractions of :26.4, :55.1 and 1:23.3 en route to his 13 ¾-length romp. Pampered Princes, with John Campbell aboard, was beaten by one-half length by Fabulous Kemp in 1:57.3. Both fillies are trained by Jimmy Takter. Pampered Princess was more successful than her stablemate last year, winning 10 races compared to Fabulous Kemp’s four-win season, but Fabulous Kemp has a famous family. Fabulous Kemp, by Yankee Glide, is out of Emilie Cas El, a half sister to the brother trio of Angus Hall, Conway Hall and Andover Hall (who is the sire of Pampered Princess). Also of note, A Touch Of Flair, a 7-year-old mare recently imported from The 3-year-old pacing colts Takeshigemichi and Yankee Skyscaper squared off in a qualifier and Takeshigemichi, a son of The Panderosa, prevailed over the Metro champion in 1:51.4 (last quarter in :26.3). Daniel Dube drove Takeshigemichi for trainer Tony Mannino while George Brennan was up behind the Artiscape colt Yankee Skyscaper for trainer Chris Ryder.
Last year's Breeders Crown 2-year-old filly pacer winner Clagary Hanover made her first qualifying appearance of the year and finished second, a nose back of Lightning D. Dube in a 1:54.4 mile. Daniel Dube drove the winning Western Ideal filly, who did not race last year and has only the experience of an earlier qualifier (an eighth-place finish) on her card. Tony Mannino trains for the Lightning Stable.
Also making his first appearance of the year was Kenneth J, last year's 2-year-old colt pace New York Sire Stakes final winner and runner-up in the Breeders Crown final to Charley Barley. With regular driver Ron Pierce in the bike, Kenneth J scored in 1:51.3 by 1 3/4 lengths over Yankee Galaxy and David Miller. The winningson of Bettor's Delight is trained by Linda Toscano for owner Kenneth Jacobs.
Last year's Dan Patch Award 3-year-old filly pacer of the year, Darlin's Delight, was fourth in the last of the day's 18 qualifiers, pacing her mile in 1:54.4 for Yannick Gingras. This was her first appearnce of the season.
