Kenneth J set a Monticello Raceway track record of 1:52.1 while winning Monday’s $478,000 Monticello Gold Rush final for driver Ron Pierce. The race was the second richest in the 50-year history of the New York racetrack.

Pierce left from post five with Kenneth J and after being parked through the first turn was able to drop into second behind the leading Fresh Deck (John Campbell) and the third-place Ghee’s House (Yannick Gingras). Content to sit second through an opening quarter of :27.3 and half of :56.3, Pierce then tipped his charge just before the three-quarters was reached in 1:24.4.

Kenneth J and Fresh Deck battled side by side through the final turn and through the stretch, but midway down the lane Kenneth J secured the lead. The son of Bettor’s Delight was able to reach the wire 1 ˝ lengths ahead of runner-up Ghee’s House and third-place finisher Hagi (Jim Morrill Jr.), both of whom ducked to the inside of Fresh Deck in deep stretch. Fresh Deck held for fourth money while Running Book (Mark MacDonald) picked up the final check.

Owned by Ken Jacobs, who named the colt for his grandson, Kenneth J is trained by Linda Toscano. The win was his fourth of the year, increasing his seasonal earnings to just under $500,000 and his career total to $920,749.
