A transformer blew after the fifth race at Vernon Downs on Saturday night, causing a small explosion that brought the local fire department to the track. The lights were knocked out in the paddock and backstretch, but electricity remained in the grandstand. Officials were hoping to come up with a solution to restore power so the remaining races, which includes the New York Sire Stakes championship races for 3-year-olds, could be contested.
The transformer blew in a small building adjacent to the race office and shook nearby buildings.
