Triple Crown gets shuffle

This year's $750,000 (est.) Yonkers Trot has been scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 25, at Yonkers Raceway, making it the first time since the inception of the Trotting Triple Crown in 1955 that the Kentucky Futurity at The Red Mile in early October will not be the third and final leg.



The trotting Triple Crown has nearly always been held in the order of the Yonkers Trot, Hambletonian and Kentucky Futurity. Only a handful of times have the Yonkers Trot and Hambletonian switched order, the last time coming in 1974. Another time came during Super Bowl's Triple Crown-winning year of 1972.



This year's Hambletonian final at the Meadowlands is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 5, followed by the Kentucky Futurity on Saturday, Oct. 7. The Yonkers Trot will then return to Yonkers for elims on Nov. 18 after being contested the past two years at Hawthorne and Freehold, respectively, after being moved due to on-going construction for the impending slots facility.



Also returning to Yonkers this year is the Messenger for 3-year-old colt pacers. The $360,000 (est.) final is also scheduled for Nov. 25, with the elims also on Nov. 18.
