Trolley Square, Wheres The Beach named Broodmares of the Year

December 12, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Trotting broodmare Trolley Square and pacing broodmare Wheres The Beach, the dams of season-long champions Deweycheatumnhowe and Somebeachsomewhere, respectively, have been named Broodmares of the Year in balloting conducted among members of the United States Harness Writers Association.

Deweycheatumnhowe is the last of nine foals by the late Trolley Square, a daughter of Speedy Somolli. This last coupling for breeder Steve Jones with Muscles Yankee produced the thunderously fast Deweycheatumnhowe, who won 22 of 25 career races, highlighted by the Hambletonian. Dewey earned $2,218,987 in 2008 alone and $3,155,178 lifetime.

The Beach Towel mare Wheres The Beach, when mated with Ontario stallion Mach Three in 2005, produced Somebeachsomewhere, who lost but once in 21 career starts–that being the famous Meadowlands Pace war with Art Official–and tied the fastest race mile ever with a 1:46.4 effort at Lexington. The breathtaking colt, who evoked comparisons with Niatross and other all-time greats, ensured that Wheres The Beach took down her division’s award for breeder Stephanie Rothaug.

Trolley Square and Wheres The Beach will be honored at the Night of Stars awards banquet on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. (USHWA)
