Trotter scores fifth straight despite making break

The Argentinean-bred trotter Chucaro Guadal overcame a late break and survived a judges' inquiry to remain unbeaten in five starts above the equator on Wednesday when taking the $3,400 non-winners trot at Pompano Park in 1:58.2

Starting from post five with conditioner Gro Formia at the lines, Chucaro Guadal was forwardly placed during the early stages of the race, battling with Star Sky (Daryl Bier) for the top spot through opening fractions of :29.1 and :58.2. As the trotters marched down the backstretch, Chucaro Guadal finally shook free of the vanquished Star Sky, and opened up a clear lead on the field through a three-quarters split in 1:28.1 before entering the lane with a four-length advantage.

Chucaro Guadal continued to march on what appeared to be an insurmountable lead in mid-stretch, but the 5 year old began drifting out and eventually went offstride, leaving the final result in doubt.

With the finish line rapidly approaching, Formia alertly pulled Chucaro Guadal to the outside, and after taking several steps, the son of Althea’s Crown was brought back to his proper gait, and crossed the wire a nose better than Rompaway Zane (Mark O’Mara).

Chucaro Guadal returned $2.80, $2.40, and $2.10 for the victory. Rompaway Zane brought in $4.20 and $2.80 for second, while Frankie Barolo paid $4.00 for third.

Owned by Osvaldo Formia of Delray Beach, Chucaro Guadal has visited the winner’s circle in 13 of 19 career starts, and has yet to be defeated since shipping up from the Southern Hemisphere earlier this season. (Pompano)
