Trotters on the turf @ Indy

Return Home
October 06, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Indiana Downs will again play host to trotters on the turf Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 10. The Shelbyville track’s race office received enough interest in the condition race, dubbed “The Green Mile,” that two divisions of nine will take to the seven-eighths mile turf course, each for a purse of $10,000.

Racing Secretary Scott Peine looked for enough trotters to drop in the box to fill one race, but was surprised by the 18 that entered for Tuesday’s contest. Last season Indiana Downs offered a $20,000 Invitational on the turf as part of closing day festivities. The race was won by campaigner Primetime Ranger in 2:05.2.

In the first division, slated as the second race on the card, former Indiana Sires Stakes champion Secret Star will line up behind the gate in post position five. The six-year-old Keep It A Secret mare has earned just over $200,000 in her career for trainer Jeff Brewer. To her right will be Strike Till Dawn and driver Mark O’Mara. The seven-year-old gelded son of Striking Sahbra has won two straight for trainer Angie Ogden.

The second $10,000 split includes two former ISS champions in Mycenae Bluegrass and Deputy D J. Mycenae Bluegrass will start from the rail in the fourth race on the program, seeking her second win of the season for owner Luel Overstreet. Doug Siefert’s Deputy D J will start from post two. The Ripken’s Victory sophomore filly will look to add her third seasonal win. DC Wizzing Music will start from post three for trainer Sara Haynes. The Sweet Wiz gelding, now six, competed in last year’s $20,000 Invitational, finishing third.

The first post for the twilight card is scheduled for 4:55 p.m.
