Trotting fillies in action

Armbro Deliberate pulled off the $24 upset to kick off the second leg of the Celia’s Counsel, the first of three $18,000 divisions in Woodbine’s trotting series for sophomore fillies held on Tuesday night.



Rick Zeron drove the San Pellegrino bay, from the eight hole, to the three-quarter length score over Helens Melons. Gyration Hanover was third, beaten 1 ½ lengths. Six trotters were separated by 2 ¾ lengths at the wire. Betting favorite Sadie H Hershey, with Trevor Ritchie driving, broke stride after taking the lead.



Ian Downey trained Armbro Deliberate to her maiden-breaking win for Susan Downey and Daniel Sarafian.



She was third in the second division of the first leg last week.



Armbro Deliberate cut the half-mile in 1:00.2, appeared to lose the lead on the turn to Helens Melons, but roared back with a :29.3 final clip to take the race in 1:59.1.

Another Armstrong Brothers-bred filly took the second division of the Celia’s Counsel as Armbro Domino collected her second win of the series and career in 1:59.3.



Chris Christoforou guided the Self Possessed bay to the one-length win over longshots Suzies On A Roll and Self Desire for trainer Rene Laarman and owner Melvin Hartman of Ottawa.



Armbro Domino had to come from way back to win after going wire-to-wire last week. She was sixth off a :59.4 half-mile split before coming home in :28.1 to earn the victory in the second leg.



She was the lone favorite to win a Celia’s Counsel split, paying $4.40 to win.



Spare Time Rozie recorded the second shocker of the night, upsetting a field of nine to the tune of $43.80 in the third division of the second leg of the Celia’s Counsel.



Darryl Lever drove and trained the Earl filly to a three-quarters of a length win over favored Mon Amour Hall in 1:59. Tallamore was another length back in the third after leading into the stretch.



John Cowan bred and owns Spare Time Rozie, who rattled off a 8 ¾-length win at Flamboro the previous week in her only other lifetime tally.



The $50,600 (estimated) final of the Celia’s Counsel is set for Tuesday, April 25.
