Classic Lane, the winner of the 2009 Classic Oaks Trot and Perretti Matchmaker Trot, died Friday morning in New Jersey, apparently of a ruptured stomach. She was a 5-year-old daughter of Lindy Lane-Heartland Classic (by Super Bowl).
Classic Lane took a mark of 1:52 at age four and earned $715,470. Owned by Bob and Lauren Tucker, she was trained by Ed Lohmeyer.
Lohmeyer trained Classic Lane on Thursday morning but felt that she was ailing in some nonspecific way, so he had her examined by his wife, veterinarian Dr. Patricia Hogan. The mare remained stable throughout Thursday night and early Friday morning, but then took a turn for the worse.
The Tuckers had planned to race Classic Lane this year and then retire her to their broodmare band at Stonegate Farm in New Jersey.
