Trotting sire Donerail heading to Europe

Donerail, the sire of $962,395 winner Spellbound Hanover and 2001 Kentucky Futurity champion Chasing Tail, has been sold to Finnish interests and will soon be leaving the U.S. to stand at stud in Sweden. The 15-year-old son of Valley Victory has stood at stud at Hanover Shoe Farms since his retirement from racing following a brief 3-year-old season.

Donerail will stand at Alebeck Stud in Sweden, where such notables as Speedy Somolli have made their home over the years.

Donerail took a mark of 1:55.4 as a 2 year old and won 13 of 15 starts. He made just six starts as a 3 year old and suffered a career-ending injury the week before the 1995 Hambletonian. He finished his racing career with earnings of $703,049 while racing out of the stable of Hall of Famer Stanley Dancer.

In addition to Spellbound Hanover and Chasing Tail, Donerail has stamped himself as a sire of top fillies, a group which includes Filly At Bigs, Day For Night, Flawless Bluestone, Victory My Way, and the prolific producer Bold Dreamer, the dam of Pampered Princess.
