Truth: Liar wins at Big M

Although Cunning Liar's 1:51.2 victory in a conditioned pace at the Meadowlands Wednesday night was nothing out of the extraordinary, what makes it unusual is that it was the 7 year old's first race anywhere away from Cal-Expo in California. And that's the truth.



A son of Jenna's Beach Boy, Cunning Liar had made all 88 of his previous starts at Cal-Expo. Owned by Billie Schwartz and Denise Maier and trained by Maier's husband, Tim, Cunning Liar was recently shipped across the country to trainer Mark Silva's barn. He arrived with 16 wins in those 88 starts. He now has 17 wins in 89 starts and $92,928 in earnings after his victory Wednesday night that knocked two full seconds off his previous mark.



Cunning Liar had just 12 starts his first three years of racing, and then in 2003 at the age of five, lined up behind the gate 37 times. He followed that in 2004 with 39 starts, with those last two years of racing producing more than $80,000 for his owners, who purchased the bay as a yearling for $8,000 from Kentucky breeder Schare Adams.
