Although six divisions of Indiana Sire Stakes for 2-year-old pacing fillies were successfully raced at Indiana Downs on Monday night, track conditions deteriorated and when a horse competing in the 12th race, an overnight, broke down on the track, the last race of the card--the 13th--was canceled. Racing officials then decided to cancel the Tuesday night card.
Dan Shetler was driving Pilgrim's Place in race 12 when the horse may have stepped in a hole in the homestretch and broke down. The horse had to be euthanized because he broke a leg. Pilgrim's Place, who was 8 years old, had a lifetime mark of 1:52.2 and career earnings of $146,096.
The Monday night program got underway with Indiana Sire Stakes action in the first race, and Dolly's Joy, a daughter of Pilgrim's Punch and a mare by Sonsam, took the split and stamped herself as the fastest of the winners with her 1:55.2 score by three lengths. The filly is trained by Brian Stephens, who also bred and co-owns her with Charles Stephens. Peter Wrenn handled the driving.
Offspring by Dontgetinmyway won thee of the six divisions. In addition to Dolly's Joy, other winners were Don't Sugar Me (Dontgetinmyway) in 1:56.1, Surprisingly Sweet (Dontgetinmyway) in 1:57.3, Lord Gordy (Dontgetinmyway) in 1:59, Endeavor's Glory (1:57.1) and Ron's Blue Angel (Panspacificflight) in 1:58.2.)
