For the first time in 30 years, harness horses will race on the turf at the Meadowlands Friday, June 19. A field of eight, $15,000 claiming pacers will line up behind the mobile starting gate for a one-mile event on the grass. The race will be part of the betting program; post positions will be drawn Tuesday, June 16.
There have been turf harness races in this country before. Most recently, one was conducted at Indiana Downs. Long ago Washington Park in Chicago held a harness race on the turf. (Meadowlands)
