Rain all day and night in Sacramento didn't stop TV Mom and Ed Hensley from performing superbly Thursday night at Cal Expo, with the trotter winning for the 14th time on the year in the $6,000 race.
In advance of starting from post-position one in the field of seven over a sloppy track, driver Lemoyne Svendsen wasn't sure how to approach the race.
"I had no thoughts going into the race," said Svendsen. "I was playing it by ear because she was going up in class, plus the (sloppy) track condition. I knew, however, that she'd give me a good race because she always does."
Sitting third at the quarter-mile pole, timed in :29.3, then sitting in fourth position at the half-mile station, timed in :58.4, Svendsen would elect to not go first-over to the final turn.
"I sat because I was actually waiting for British Columbia (Steve Hyman), who had pulled from behind me to go first-over, to pass me so I could follow her. But, she never got by me and that had me locked in. It, however, didn't concern me, because when Eddie (Hensley) pulled with Jess Or No I took over his spot on the inside. From that point, I knew I just had to wait for something to open up in the stretch."
Still looking for room at the three-quarter mile marker, timed in 1:28.3, TV Mom would find racing freedom as the field entered the stretch.
"When things opened up, I started to ask her for trot and she lit up--so I just started heading for the outside for clearance. Once I was free and three-wide at the seven-eighths--I knew I was a winner because when she came out from behind I Look Special (Gilbert Herrera), who was two-wide--she had some serious authority. From that point on, it was a jog-burger."
Closing nicely to win by 1 1/2 lengths, the Maurice Sigmon-owned and Kennedy Lindsey-trained 4 year old, in winning her third straight, would score ($6.60) in 1:59.2. I Look Special finished in second, and Four Starzzzz Hall (Rick Kuebler) finished another 2 1/4 lengths farther back, in third.
"It was a very easy race for her once again," Svendsen finished. (Cal Expo)
