Two-time NY Sire Stakes champ just misses a million

With mid-September victories in the $150,000 New York Sire Stakes final and a $93,000 Bluegrass division, the 3-year-old colt pacer Kenneth J appeared to be well on his way to a $1 million season. However, a roadblock developed when Kenneth J developed a quarter crack, and the end result was the son of Bettor’s Delight falling just $54,000 short of reaching the seven-digit mark.

On Monday night, Dec. 10, Kenneth J made his final start of the year in the $262,363 Matron final at Dover Downs, finishing a non-threatening seventh. Afterward, trainer Linda Toscano revealed that the primary reason behind starting Kenneth J in the Matron was to give him a chance to reach the $1 million mark in 2007 earnings—he entered the race at $946,137.

“We would never be entertaining (the Matron), but he was so close to a million that we figured we’d give it a shot,” said Toscano of the colt who has lifetime earnings of $1,368,127 for New York owner Ken Jacobs. “When a popped a quarter crack we decided to skip the Breeders Crown and let him tell us if we should try the Matron. He had a couple weeks off and seemed to be pretty good.”

Kenneth J’s freshman campaign in 2006 saw him win seven times in 11 starts, including a New York Sire Stakes championship and two Grand Circuit victories at The Red Mile, as well as a season-ending runner-up Breeders Crown finish. His year concluded with runner-up accolades for divisional honors.

This year Kenneth J won eight of 15 starts, including a career-best 1:49.3 effort in his Bluegrass victory. His biggest win came in the $478,000 Gold Rush at Monticello, and he also earned a hefty check via his second-place finish in the $725,480 Messenger final.

“(The Matron) was his last start for the year, but he will race next year,” added Toscano.
