After visiting the winner’s circle 10 times in 42 starts during his 4-year-old campaign, Paper Luck began his 2008 season with his second successive score, taking Saturday’s featured $14,000 Open Handicap pace at Pompano Park in 1:53. Starting from the inside post with Bruce Ranger at the lines, Paper Luck conceded the early lead to Pan Prix (John Kakaley), settling in third place as that one showed the way through opening fractions of :27.2 and :57. As the pacers began their journey down the backstretch, Ranger moved Paper Luck off the pylons to present a first-over bid, marching up uncovered while methodically grinding away at the advantage held by Pan Prix, who passed the three-quarters marker in 1:25. Paper Luck wrestled the lead away from Pan Prix on the final turn to enter the stretch with a one-length advantage, and remained strong down the lane to prevail by a one-half length over the fast-closing Eleven A M. Paper Luck paid $7.60, $3.60, and $2.10 for the victory. Eleven A M (Daryl Bier) returned $4.00 and $2.40 for second, while Star Role (Anthony Napolitano) brought in $2.80 for third. Owned by Fred Monteleone Stable LLC of Pompano Beach, and trained by Ranger, Paper Luck is a 17-time winner during his career, with lifetime earnings of $182,258. (Pompano Park)
