Horseowner and New York real estate manager Martin Scharf presented Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship awards to college students Andrea Nickerson and Te’neisha Washington on Saturday night at the Meadowlands.

Andrea Nickerson, a pre-med student at Elmira College, received the $15,000 first prize scholarship. Nickerson is from Friendship, N.Y., where her father, Gary, is a dairy farmer and horseman and her mother is an elementary school teacher.

“I love it (at Elmira), I’m doing well,” Nickerson said. “I hope to take this opportunity and meet Mr. Scharf’s expectations. I was very surprised (when I got the call), it took me a while to convince my father that I actually won.”

Te’neshia Washington of Monticello, N.Y., received the $5,000 Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship. She is a graphic design major at the College of St. Rose.

This marks the third year Martin Scharf of Lawrence, N.Y., has awarded scholarships named for his champion pacer to children of regional horsemen. The scholarships are administered by the Harness Horse Youth Foundation, a non-profit organization that educates young people in working with harness horses.

“We were able to find two young ladies this year that were definitely deserving of the awards,” Scharf said. “They are both aspiring young students, doing well in school and hopefully, this scholarship will help them.”

For further information about the Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship, contact Ellen Taylor of the Harness Horse Youth Foundation at (317) 867-5877 or visit the organization’s website, www.hhyf.org.
