Ultimate Princess win

May 02, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Ultimate Bet, trained by Erv Miller and driven by Mark MacDonald, used a pocket trip to knock off nine rivals in 1:52.4 in Monday's opening leg of the Princess Pacing Series at Woodbine. The series is for 3-year-old fillies who were non-winners of $100,000 in 2005.

The daughter of Bettors Delight left hard from post nine to make the front before releasing the undefeated race favorite Mary Artman to the top at the opening quarter in :27. MacDonald then bided his time until the stretch drive.

Mary Artman paced a second quarter in :29.1 to take the field to the half in :56.1 and she buzzed the third quarter in :28.4 while feeling first-over pressure from Allamerican Memory and Roger Mayotte, who drew within a half-length of the leader at the third station in 1:25.

Allamerican Memory put away pacesetter Mary Artman by the time the field had reached the head of the lane, but she couldn’t hold off the late rush from pocket-sitting Ultimate Bet, who shook loose and used a :27.3 final quarter to seal the deal. Allamerican Memory hung tough to finish second while Gina Raider benefited from a ground-saving trip to finish another two-lengths back in third.

Trainer Bob McIntosh, who sent out the favored entry of Everybreathutake and Mary Artman, watched his fillies finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Ultimate Bet, who was a $27,000 yearling purchase at the 2004 Harrisburg yearling sale, is now one-for-three in 2006 following her two-for-two rookie season for Daniel Waxman's Vandalay Racing Stable. The filly is out of the Life Sign mare Sign Of Rain, who took a mark of 1:53 when she won a stakes at the Indiana State Fair in 1998.
