Unrecognized Saint and driver Trace Tetrick prevailed in the first leg of the 3-year-old colt and gelding Indiana Sire Stakes at Hoosier Park Saturday with a mile in 1:55.1. It was a snappy start to the first quarter with Unrecognized Saint sitting perfect on the inside behind the leader, Don’ttrytostopme and Jason Dillander. The single-file field reached the quarter pole in :27. Blueridge Finance and Jim Shelton made a move before the halfway-mark for the lead in :56.3. The field began to bunch up near the three-quarter mile marker. Dreaming Royalty and Mark O’Mara made a move into the outside flow. Unrecognized Saint was able to follow, making a break for it when JJ Magabucks went off stride and opened up an opportunity for Tetrick to get Unrecognized Saint out. Unrecognized Saint had a significant lead in the stretch, leaving Dreaming Royalty and Clapifuc Bluegrass, with Ricky Macomber Jr., fighting for second. Dreaming Royalty prevailed, finishing second over Clapifuc Bluegrass. “He (Unrecognized Saint) wanted to leave behind the gate, so I let him go and get positioning,” Tetrick said. “The trip just worked out perfectly. When Andy Shetler’s horse made a break, it gave me room to get out around the turn, which put me in a perfect spot for the stretch drive. I wasn’t surprised with the finish, because he (Unrecognized Saint) did well in the qualifier. I actually had to back him up in the stretch and get him out in that qualifier before he could pace home.” This was a successful first start of the year for Unrecognized Saint. He returned $14.80, $5.40, and $4.60. The sophomore son of Capital Request is owned by Dot Morgan and trained by her husband, Charlie. He was lightly raced at two last year, earning two wins in six starts for a total of $16,000 in earnings. Tetrick continues to lead the driver standings in 2008. The 21-year-old driver from Geff, Ill., has 24 wins through the first 16 nights of racing. The $12,000 second leg of the Indiana Sires Stakes is scheduled for May 9. The $100,000 final is set for Saturday, June 28, Hoosier Cup Night. (Hoosier Park)
