USHWA honors top horses

Return Home
December 19, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Three-year-old pacer Rocknroll Hanover and older trotters Peaceful Way and Mr. Muscleman spent the majority of harness racing's stakes season dominating the competition. Now, they can stake claims to the offseason, too.

The three--who ended the season tightly bunched at the top of the Hambletonian Society/Breeders Crown Top 10 poll -- were among five horses named Dan Patch Award winners Monday by the U.S. Harness Writers Association. Also locking up honors by being the only recipients of at least 10 percent of the vote in their divisions were 2-year-old trotters Passionate Glide and Chocolatier.

Dan Patch Award winners will be honored at the Night of Stars banquet Feb. 8 at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Winners in the seven remaining contested divisions will be announced at that time, plus Trotter, Pacer and Horse of the Year.

Finalists in contested divisions are Jereme's Jet and Western Ace, 2-year-old male pacers; Darlin's Delight and My Little Dragon, 2-year-old filly pacers; Belovedangel and Cabrini Hanover, 3-year-old filly pacers; Strong Yankee and Vivid Photo, 3-year-old male trotters; Blur and Her Culese, 3-year-old filly trotters; Admiral's Express, Boulder Creek, Maltese Artist and Ponder, older male pacers; and Burning Point and Loyal Opposition, mare pacers.

A horse needed to receive at least 20 votes from 200 returned ballots to be a Dan Patch Award finalist.
