Although the skies over Columbus, Ohio were sunny Saturday, the winter storm that hit the East Coast on Friday precluded several directors of the U.S. Trotting Association from arriving in time for the annual meeting's opening session. When chairman Ivan Axelrod asked for the roll call there were 41 directors present, although a few arrived during the afternoon after long travel woes.
Sports Illustrated's Charles Leerhsen was the opening guest speaker and he talked via conference call about his soon-to-be-released book on Dan Patch. The board of directors then went through a few housekeeping matters before breaking into committee gatherings.
The driver/trainer committee and the pari-mutuel committee met and discussed the proposed rule changes, one of which involves a new structure for racetracks to pay dues to the USTA.
The communications/marketing group also meet and heard a presentation from Monica Thors about a 13-week TV show she is producing in conjunction with TVG that she hopes to begin airing in late spring. Chairman Donald "Skip" Hoovler also presented an idea to formulate a new position to be called "fair liaison manager," to coordinate the 250-plus fairs in this country.
Meetings continue Sunday and Monday before adjourning.
