In a full board session on Sunday morning, the board of directors of the U.S. Trotting Association agreed to continue the stay of its suspension of Standardbred owner and USTA member Jeffrey Brooks and family members and various stables associated with Brooks.
On Feb. 2 the USTA suspensed the licenses of Jeffrey Brooks, various family members, and stables, most notably Bulletproof Enterprises, whose horses earned more than $10 million in purses last year. The USTA's action was taken following the suspension of Jeffrey Brooks's license by the Ontario Racing Commission on Jan. 26.
"With a lot of discussion, and a lot of legal advice, we have taken the position that in the case of Jeffrey Brooks, and Bulletproof and other entities, we have continued the stay...because when we considered it yesterday and today, they (Brooks) still have not had a hearing in Canada," said USTA president Phil Langley of the USTA's decision.
When it suspended Brooks, other Brooks family members, and various stable names back on Feb. 2, the USTA cited Rule 22, Section 14 of its rule book which states, in part, that “All persons and horses under suspension or expulsion by any State Racing Commission or by a reputable Trotting Association of a foreign country shall upon notice from such commission or association to the Executive Vice President, be suspended or expelled by this Association.”
