For the second straight week, Vapor In The Wind ($5.60), showed that that he is the horse to beat at the Isle Pompano Park, capturing the $16,000 Open Handicap Pace Saturday in 1:52.

Leading from start to finish in the fifth race feature, driver Wally Hennessey held the field at bay with Vapor In The Wind, cutting fractions of :27.4, :56.4 and 1:25.3 to the three quarters and then unleashed a :26.2 final quarter mile to win going away by three open lengths. The pocket sitting Sugar’s Pride (Anthony Napolitano) was second with Monet C C (Joe Pavia Jr.) third.

Trained by Dick Macomber and owned by the Tanah Merah Farms of Springfield, IL, it was the 10th win this year for Vapor In The Wind, a 4-year-old gelding son of Cole Muffler.

Saturday’s fourth race trot produced a blanket five-horse finish where only three-quarters of a length separated the first and fifth place finishers.

Banker Ablaze ($4.60) and driver Bruce Ranger were able to wire the field in 1:59.4 and they barely won by a nose over Leave No Message (David Ingraham), who was second by a nose over John Doe (Rick Harp) who was third by just a neck over Muscle Boss Vita (Dan Clements), who was fourth by one-half length to fifth place finisher Ens Apollo (Joe Pavia, Jr.) . (Pompano Park)
