Longtime horse owner Verle Dwight Barrett, 73, of Dayton, Pa., died in an automobile accident Friday. His wife, Demona (Detamore) Barrett, 74, was transported to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh for treatment but later died as a result of injuries sustained in the same accident. Mr. Barrett was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Dayton, Pa., to Raymond and Olive (Anthony) Barrett. Mrs. Barrett was born Nov. 4, 1934, in Huntington, Ind., to William “Bill” Lamoine and Virginia Nell (Endsley) Detamore. Both Mr. and Mrs. Barrett were members of the Dayton United Methodist Church, and active in the sport of harness racing for a number of years, with their Rosemont Student setting a track record at Scioto Downs. Mr. Barrett was a founder of B&B Oil and Gas Production Company, and took great pleasure in his past endeavors as a licensed barber, operating a successful barber shop near the campus of Taylor University. As a Business and Economics graduate of Taylor University in Upland, Ind., Mrs. Barrett demonstrated a superior business sense and bookkeeping skills. Mr. and Mrs. Barrett are survived by their daughter, Julie Jonell, and son, Barry Dwight. Mr. Barrett is also survived by three brothers, Rev. Eugene (Lorraine), Lyle (Lorena), and James (Judy); three sisters, Patricia (Venton) Hetrick, Irene B. Alyn, and Paula (Herman) Reedy. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Raymond Ira. Mrs. Barrett is also survived by her mother, Virginia Nell (Endsley) Detamore; two sisters, Lamona Miller and Berta Theone “Sis” Long; and brother, Burtis Theron “Sonny” Detamore. She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Lamoine Detamore. Friends will be received from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday, November 28, at the Dayton United Methodist Church, 105 East Church Street, Dayton, PA 16222. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, at the Dayton United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Howard officiating.
