The Jessica Okusko-trained pacer Prolific Pacer turned in the fastest mile during Thursday's (April 4) initial qualifying session at Vernon Downs as the central New York seven-eighths mile track began preparations for its 55th live harness racing season.
Competing in a light rain, 38-degree temperature and over a "sloppy" track, Prolific Pacer had Vernon's defending driving champ Howard Okusko, Jr. at the controls as he cut out a 1:59.3 victory to defeat Ruffled Tux by one length. The win was one of four during the six race card for Okusko, who earned 99 tallies here in 2007.
Thursday's other qualifying winners included the pacers Vicar Hall (Okusko, Jr.) in 2:00.3, Badlands George (Okusko, Jr.) in 2:03, and trotters Jack's Reef (Jody Weidman) in 2:02.4, Stormont Wok (Claude Huckabone, Jr.) in 2:04 and Pembroke Ginger (Okusko, Jr.) in 2:06.3.
The Downs has scheduled additional qualifying program for 11 a.m. next Tuesday (April 8) and Friday (April 11). Entries are due prior to 10 a.m. the day before each slated session.
Vernon Downs will kick off a planned 90-card campaign at 6:55 p.m. on Friday, April 18.
