August 31, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

An overflow crowd of about 10,000 packed Vernon Downs Thursday night as the New York racetrack re-opened for live racing for the first time in two years. "The people are tickled to death that the track is re-opened and with the facility," Tioga Downs' Jason Settlemoir told harnessracing.com.

The first race of the night went to Bob's Ring Of Fire and driver Chuck Connor Jr., who rallied late down the stretch to edge Ladysai and Joe Pavia Jr. in 1:57.2 in a $2,100 conditioned pace. The time was a career-best by more than 10 seconds for the 3-year-old daughter of The Firepan trained by Lonny Hale and owned by Robert and Elaine Siemski of Utica, N.Y.
