Vernon has temp license

The Syracuse Post Standard reports that Vernon Downs officials have received a temporary license from the state lottery to open a casino with about 800 video gaming machines. Racing is scheduled to begin Aug. 26, and according to Doug Tudman, spokesman for track owners American Racing and Entertainment, the video machines have been ordered and the casino will open in November.

Tudman said track employees are working hard to meet requirements laid out last month by the state Racing and Wagering Board. After an inspection in mid-July, the board said Vernon Downs must improve the paddock area, racetrack, grandstand, judge's booth, stables and veterinarian offices before racing could begin.

All employees must be properly licensed, too, the board said.

"We're going down the list with Racing and Wagering, and it's coming along well," Tudman said.
