Former New York horseman Bruce C. Lawton, 66, died Dec. 7 in the Oneida (NY) Healthcare Center.
Mr. Lawton was born on Feb. 13, 1943 in Rome, N.Y., a son of the late Clifford and Eleanor (Grant) Lawton, and received his education in Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School System. Bruce proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force from 1961-1965. Prior to his illness, he was an employee of the Oneida Daily Dispatch newspaper. Earlier in his career, he was an owner and trainer of Standardbred horses for many years at Vernon Downs.
Surviving are four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Lee Lawton of Blossvale, Dale and Nancy Lawton of Verona, Alan and Patty Lawton of Verona and Kevin Lawton of Chandler, Ariz.; as well as several nieces and nephews and close friends. Bruce was predeceased by a son, Steven Lawton.
In keeping with Mr. Lawton's wishes, there were no calling hours and no funeral services. Private burial will be in West Verona Cemetery, Verona, N.Y. The Malecki Funeral Home of Vernon was in charge of the funeral arrangements. (Vernon)
