The New York State Racing and Wagering Board Thursday approved another month of racing for Vernon Downs, according to a story in the Syracuse Post-Standard.
Vernon, which was operating on a one-month approval from the Board since opening April 7, had asked for permission to race through November. But Board spokesman Dan Toomey told the Post-Standard that board members were concerned about the shortage of horses that has prevented Vernon from racing on Thursdays. Track officials say they should be able to resum Thursday racing next week.
The racing board is scheduled to vote on the remainder of Vernons season in late May.
The newwspaper account also said Vernon officials must submit paperwork on the recent pullout of Navada gold, the Texas casino company that owned about 23 percent of the company that runs the track. Nevada gold claimed it couldn't make money with New York's high tax rate on racetrack casinos.
