Veteran trotter wins at Big M

Hez Striking angled out three wide in the stretch and drew off to a 2 1/4-length victory in $32,500 winners-over trot, on Friday night at the Meadowlands. It was the first win since 2004 for the 7-year-old trotter, although he still earned more than $230,000 last year in 19 starts.



It was the season's debut for Hez Striking, driven by Ron Pierce and trained by Richard "Nifty" Norman. The mile was trotted in 1:55.2.



HZ Easy, who cut the fractions, held on for second. It was 3 3/4 lengths back to Nahcotta Jude in third.



Norman is pointing the trotter toward the Su Mac Lad Series at the Meadowlands, which begins on March 26 and concludes with a $126,500 final on April 9.



Owned by Bart Glass and Robert Kauffman, Hez Striking increased his career earnings to $686,045 with the victory. Last year he didn't find the winner's circle but picked up big checks in the Maple Leaf Trot, Classic Series final, Nat Ray and Titan Cup, among others.
